MEDICAL ASSISTANT PROGRAM

 

A Medical Assistant is an allied health professional trained in all aspects of medical office practices.  The comprehensive training at DXATC includes administrative as well as clinical competencies.  Training includes class work, hands on skill practice and an externship in the medical office.

A Medical Assistant assists the physicians in all aspects of medical office practices.  The MA may be found in the front office performing office duties and tasks, but is more commonly found in the back office performing clinical duties including: obtaining vital signs, managing back office, obtaining patient history, instrument sterilization, diagnostic testing, patient education, specimen collection and processing, and administration medications and injections.  The student will be required to complete 180 hours of non-paid externship in a medical office.  This training will be secured by the department and will provide the student with on-the-job-experience.

Due to the sensitive nature of the subjects taught in the Medical Assistant Program there are several additional admission requirements.  Medical Assistant students will find themselves in situations where they may come in contact with body fluids, be involved in the treatments and care of sick people, work with medications involving narcotics, and so forth.  THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS PROGRAM:

After satisfactory completion of the Medical Assisting Program, State Certification Exams are available for the student to take.  However, certification is not currently required to work in the Medical Assistant Profession.

 

Job Outlook:

Medical Assisting is one of the fastest growing professions today.  Employment can be found in physician’s offices, hospital emergency departments, and outpatient surgical clinics.
