High School Students

High school students will be admitted upon the recommendation of their high school counselor.  It is the responsibility of the high school counselor to ascertain the maturity level and academic readiness of high school students prior to placement in DXATC courses.  High school students found to be deficient in maturity or academic readiness may be transferred back to their home high school.  With the exception of workbooks, consumable materials, and testing fees, students in high school may take DXATC courses free of charge through the end of the senior year.

Adult Students

Non-Matriculated Adult Students are allowed to enroll in classes on a personal improvement/personal interest basis without being required to complete entrance testing.

Matriculated Adult Students, who wish to be admitted into a program, must meet with the DXATC Student Services Counselor and complete the admission requirements of the specific program they are applying for.

  • DXATC programs require a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Adult students may be admitted to these programs by following the ability to benefit process and by providing CPT/ACT scores that meet the program admission requirements.
Inmates

Inmates desiring to enter the DXATC programs taught at Purgatory must obtain a recommendation from the correctional staff of the facility at which they are housed. It is the responsibility of the correctional staff to determine the academic readiness of these inmates prior to placement.

Ability to Benefit

The Dixie Applied Technology College has researched the U.S. Department of Education ability to benefit (ATB) standard for applicants who do not have a high school diploma or equivalent.  This “Ability to Benefit” is measured at the DXATC through a computerized test approved by the U.S. Department of Education, the CPT-Accuplacer Test.

Accuplacer (CPT)                                    Minimum Required Score        ACT Equivalent

              Reading Comprehension                          55                                         14

              Sentence Structure                                      60                                         14

              Arithmetic                                                       34                                         15

Results on other U.S. Department of Education approved tests are acceptable through official transmission of test results.  The Student Services Counselor refers applicants to the DSC Testing Center to complete the Accuplacer Test.  Applicants who score on or above the required score are eligible for matriculation into the prospective program.  If test results are below the minimum required score, the applicant is referred to the DSC Learning Center for remediation.

Records of student progress are maintained and include: test scores, skills competencies, attendance, grades and job placement.

The effectiveness of the ability to benefit procedure will be evaluated annually through the use of the competency documentation form that addresses student progression in a program.  Program completion is the measure of the ATB process.
